The Pennsylvania State University popular rolling colleges

When it comes to choosing a college, there are many important factors to consider. One of the most important is whether the school has a rolling admissions policy or not. Rolling admissions means that the school doesn’t have specific deadlines for when applications are due. Instead, they review applications as they come in and make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

On the other hand, the hard-deadline admissions system is one where students are provided with dates for when they can start applying as well as for when their submissions must be made. No more applications are accepted by the college after the deadline has passed except under special circumstances.

Hard deadlines can be difficult for students to meet, especially if an application is long and challenging or if they are unsure of which college to apply to and want to keep their options open till the very end. Rolling admissions can therefore be a lifesaver.

If you’re looking for a college with rolling admissions, in this blog, we’re going to list down the most popular rolling colleges out there.

What is Rolling Admission?

What is Rolling Admission

The rolling admission process is a system that some colleges follow where they keep their applications open for an extended period of time – sometimes even an entire year – and keep reviewing applications as they come in. They accept students on a first-come-first-served basis and only close applications once their cap is full for the number of students they want to take in.

While applications in such cases remain open and there is no hard deadline, colleges do set a priority deadline and of course a final deadline just before the start of the semester. A priority deadline means that applications coming in within that period will be prioritized and students will have a higher chance of being accepted. The final deadline is set because the college needs to stop accepting students before classes begin in case the maximum has not been reached.

popular rolling colleges in the US - Michigan State University

We think these particular universities might be excellent options because along with rolling admissions, they have a healthy and diverse environment, provide a high quality of education, offer good scholarships and financial aid, and have a decent acceptance rate.

1. The Pennsylvania State University

Penn State is the most popular rolling college in the United States and has an acceptance rate of 56%. Penn State offers rolling admissions with a $65 application fee and has an early action deadline for applicants which is the 1st of November. Applicants applying here must submit their school transcripts. Submitting SAT or ACT scores is not a requirement, but is certainly considered by the admission team when they are reviewing your application.

2. Michigan State University

Michigan State University is also an excellent choice if you want to apply to a rolling college and has an acceptance rate of 76%. It also had an application fee of $65 and an early action deadline of November 1st. Michigan State University (MSU)  gives  71% of its students some sort of financial aid, offers a wide variety of majors, and has an enjoyable campus life. For applications, MSU requires your high school transcripts and also prefers SAT or ACT scores even though they are not necessary to submit.

3. University of Pittsburgh

The third college on our list is the University of Pittsburgh which has an acceptance rate of 64% and offers 78% of the students a financial aid. The application fee for Pitt is $55 and submitting your high school transcript is once again a requirement. As in Penn State and MUS, Pitt also considers SAT and ACT scores but they are not a necessity.

4. University of Iowa

The acceptance rate for the University of Iowa is 84% with 87% of its total student body receiving financial aid. The application fee for UIowa is $40 and your college prep courses, high school GPA and transcripts are an admission requirement. You can also submit your SAT and ACT scores which will be considered by the admissions team even though they are not a necessity.

5. Arizona State University

With an acceptance rate of 88%, Arizona State University makes it to the top 5 in our list of the most popular rolling colleges across the United States. ASU charges an application fee of $50 and offers financial aid to 94% of its students. There are no early action deadlines in ASU. For the application, your high school transcripts are essential and your high school GPA and college prep courses are recommended. While submitting your SAT or ACT scores is considered, it is not an admission requirement.

Rolling Admissions: Intakes and Deadlines

Intakes and deadlines in rolling colleges

Colleges that follow the rolling admissions process usually open their applications in the fall of the year preceding the academic year that you will be starting and keep them open during the spring of next year. This means that they keep reviewing applications throughout this period and accept students who meet their admission criteria.

There is, however, a cap on the number of students these colleges are willing to take in, which means that rolling admissions only work until that cap is reached. Once the maximum capacity has been reached and more applications cannot be accommodated, colleges close the application process earlier.

It is important to keep in mind that while the intake process of rolling colleges may be operational throughout the year and there is no hard deadline, there may be early action, priority, and final deadlines. Early action and priority deadlines give students leeway in the sense that they can get accepted without having to worry about seats being taken. Final deadlines are put in place so the college can stop taking in students before the beginning of the semester. Sometimes, there may even be deadlines to apply for scholarships, grants, and housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do colleges do rolling admissions?

Colleges like Penn State offer rolling admissions to students to allow them the flexibility of time in filling out their applications. The system of rolling admissions not only reduces the stress of deadlines for students but is also beneficial for colleges themselves in the sense that it reduces the burden of reviewing applications for the admissions team on campus as they can go through each application as it comes in.

Is rolling admission easier or harder?

Rolling admission processes aren’t easier than regular admissions in terms of the application itself. In both cases, you need to make your application strong and write a powerful personal statement so that you can be considered for acceptance. The process, however, can be considered easier because it is more flexible and you can take your time completing your application instead of being stressed out about having to submit it before the deadline.

Does applying late hurt your chances of admission?

One of the biggest advantages of colleges with rolling admissions is the fact that you can even apply right before classes actually begin because there is no hard deadline. However, when submitting your applications late, it must be taken into consideration that rolling admissions cater to students on a first-come-first-served basis which means that if the cap has been reached by the time you apply, the university will not accept you.

How long does it take to hear back from a college with rolling admissions?

Colleges that follow the rolling admissions system review applications as they come in and reply to students with news of their acceptance or rejection within four to six weeks of their submission.

What Are the Next Steps After Applying to a College for Admission?

Next steps after applying for admission

After submitting your application, you wait. It typically takes four to six weeks to hear back from colleges with rolling admissions on a decision regarding your acceptance. You must not sit idly for there are still some things required of you even after you have sent in your application.

First, review whether you have submitted all the necessary documents and forms along with your main application. This could include your complete academic transcripts, meta-curricular transcripts, and housing applications. Make sure you also complete your financial aid forms (FAFSA and CSS Profile) as per the college requirement and submit them before their deadlines.

In addition to this, you must register for application portals if it is a requirement and keep checking your admission status there so that you can take action accordingly. Furthermore, and this is an important one, prepare for your interview beforehand. The prospect of giving an interview is anxiety-inducing for a lot of people, so make sure you do your research and know the answers to some of the most generic questions that your interviewers may ask you.

Try to engage with the college by attending events, visiting the campus, and talking to existing members of the student body to show them your interest in getting accepted and joining their community. This may, in some cases, give you leverage when the admissions team is reviewing your application.

Lastly, don’t forget that your senior year at high school is going to end soon. Try to make the most of it by focusing on your studies and at the same time, making some amazing memories.

Conclusion

While rolling admissions do not have hard deadlines, there are some deadlines that they set which you should be mindful of when applying. They include early action, priority, and final deadlines. There may be separate deadlines for scholarships, grants, and housing accommodations as well.

In this article, we talked bout the most popular rolling colleges in the United States both overall and state-wise. The Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh, and Michigan State University make it to the top of this list and are excellent options for you to consider.

If you are applying to a college that follows the process of rolling admissions you must keep in mind that it does not mean that you can take your application lightly. Yes, you have more time to work on it and there is less pressure on you as compared to regular admissions, but the quality of your application still needs to be extremely good for you to be accepted.

Even after your application is complete, you must put in great effort in reviewing all application requirements, filling out your forms on time, preparing for a potential interview, and demonstrating your interest in the college.
