When choosing a college, there are many important factors to consider. One of the most important is whether the school has a rolling admissions policy. Rolling admissions means that the school has yet to set specific deadlines for when applications are due. Instead, they review applications as they come in and make decisions on a case-by-case basis.
On the other hand, the hard-deadline admissions system gives students dates for when they can start applying and when they are supposed to submit. The college accepts no more applications after the deadline except under special circumstances.
Hard deadlines can be difficult for students, especially if an application is long and challenging or if they are unsure which college to apply to and want to keep their options open until the end. Rolling admissions can therefore be a lifesaver.
If you’re looking for a college with rolling admissions, we will list the most popular rolling colleges in this blog.
What Is Rolling Admission?
The rolling admission process is a system that some colleges follow. They keep their applications open for an extended period – sometimes even an entire year – and review them as they come in. They accept students on a first-come-first-served basis and only close applications once their cap is complete for the number of students they want to take in.
While applications in such cases remain open and there is no hard deadline, colleges do set a priority deadline and, of course, a final deadline just before the start of the semester. A priority deadline means that applications received within that time are considered higher, resulting in a higher probability that applications will be approved.
The deadline is finalized because the college needs to stop admitting students before classes begin in case the maximum has yet to be reached.
Popular Rolling Colleges and Universities in the United States
The Pennsylvania State University – An Acceptance Rate of 56%
Michigan State University – An Acceptance Rate of 76%
University of Pittsburgh – An Acceptance Rate of 64%
The University of Iowa – An Acceptance Rate of 84%
Arizona State University – An Acceptance Rate of 88%
Suppose you are considering applying to a college with rolling admissions and a flexible application process. In that case, you can refer to the list below, where we have picked out 5 popular rolling colleges across the United States.
These particular universities are excellent options because, along with rolling admissions, they have a healthy and diverse environment, provide a high quality of education, offer good scholarships and financial aid, and have a decent acceptance rate.
1. The Pennsylvania State University
Penn State is the most popular rolling college in the United States, with an acceptance rate of 56%. Penn State offers rolling admissions with a $65 application fee and has an early action deadline for applicants, which is the 1st of November.
Applicants applying here must submit their school transcripts. Raising SAT or ACT scores is not a requirement but is certainly considered by the admission team when reviewing your application.
2. Michigan State University
Michigan State University is also an excellent choice if you want to apply to a rolling college and has an acceptance rate of 76%. It also had an application fee of $65 and an early action deadline of the 1st of November.
Michigan State University (MSU) gives 71% of its student’s financial aid, offers various majors, and has an enjoyable campus life. For applications, MSU requires your high school transcripts and prefers SAT or ACT scores, even though they are unnecessary to submit.
3. University of Pittsburgh
The third college on our list is the University of Pittsburgh which has an acceptance rate of 64% and offers 78% of the students financial aid. The application fee for Pitt is $55, and submitting your high school transcript is once again a requirement. As in Penn State and MUS, Pitt also considers SAT and ACT scores, but they are unnecessary.
4. University of Iowa
The acceptance rate for the University of Iowa is 84%, with 87% of its total student body receiving financial aid. The application fee for Lowa is $40, and your college prep courses, high school GPA and transcripts are an admission requirement.
You can also submit your SAT and ACT scores which will be considered by the admissions team even though they are not a necessity.
5. Arizona State University
With an acceptance rate of 88%, Arizona State University makes it to the top 5 in our list of the most popular rolling colleges across the United States. ASU charges an application fee of $50 and offers 94% of its student’s financial aid. There are no early action deadlines in ASU.
Your high school transcripts are essential for the application. Your high school GPA and college prep courses are recommended. While submitting your SAT or ACT scores is considered, it is not an admission requirement.

Rolling Admissions: Intakes and Deadlines
Colleges that follow the rolling admissions process usually open their applications in the fall of the year preceding the academic year that you will be starting. Keep them open during the spring of next year. This means they keep reviewing applications throughout this period and accept students meeting their admission criteria.
There is, however, a cap on the number of students these colleges are willing to take in, which means that rolling admissions only work until that cap is reached. Colleges conclude the application process earlier if the capacity is completed and further applications cannot be accepted.
It is important to remember that while the intake process of rolling colleges may be operational throughout the year and there is no hard deadline, there may be early action, priority, and final deadlines. Early action and priority deadlines give students leeway because they can get accepted without worrying about total seats.
Final deadlines are put in place so the college can stop taking in students before the beginning of the semester. Sometimes, there may be deadlines to apply for scholarships, grants, and housing.
What Are the Next Steps After Applying to a College for Admission?
After submitting your application, you wait. It typically takes four to six weeks to hear back from colleges with rolling admissions on a decision regarding your acceptance. You must not sit idly, for some things are still required of you even after you have submitted your application.
First, review whether you have submitted all the necessary documents and forms and your primary application. This could include your academic transcripts, meta-curricular transcripts, and housing applications. Complete your financial aid forms (FAFSA and CSS Profile) as per the college requirement and submit them before their deadlines.
In addition, you must register for application portals if it is a requirement and keep checking your admission status there so that you can take action accordingly. Furthermore, and this is an important one, prepare for your interview beforehand. The prospect of giving an interview is anxiety-inducing for a lot of people, so make sure you do your research and know the answers to some of the most generic questions that your interviewers may ask you.
Try to engage with the college by attending events, visiting the campus, and talking to existing student body members to show them your interest in getting accepted and joining their community. This may give you leverage when the admissions team reviews your application.
Lastly, remember that your senior year at high school will end soon. Try to make the most of it by focusing on your studies and, at the same time, making some fantastic memories.
Conclusion
While rolling admissions do not have hard deadlines, they set some deadlines you should be mindful of when applying. They include early action, priority, and final deadlines. There may also be separate scholarships, grants, and housing accommodations deadlines.
In this article, we talked bout the most popular rolling colleges in the United States, both overall and state-wise. The Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh, and Michigan State University make it to the top of this list and are excellent options for you to consider.
If you are applying to a college that follows the rolling admissions process, you must remember that it does not mean you can take your application lightly. Yes, you have more time to work on it, and there is less pressure on you than regular admissions, but the quality of your application still needs to be extremely good for you to be accepted.
Even after completing your application, you must put great effort into reviewing all application requirements, filling out your forms on time, preparing for a potential interview, and demonstrating your interest in the college.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do colleges make rolling admissions?
Colleges like Penn State offer rolling admissions to students to allow them the flexibility of time in filling out their applications. The rolling admissions system reduces the stress of deadlines for students and is also beneficial for colleges. It reduces the burden of reviewing applications for the admissions team on campus, as they can go through each application as it comes in.
Is rolling admission easier or harder?
Rolling admission processes are more challenging than regular admissions regarding the application itself. In both cases, you must make your application strong and write a powerful personal statement to get acceptance. However, the process is more straightforward because it is more flexible. You can take your time completing your application instead of being stressed out about submitting it before the deadline.
Does apply late hurt your chances of admission?
One of the most significant advantages of colleges with rolling admissions is that you can apply right before classes begin because there is no hard deadline.
How long does it take to hear back from a college with rolling admissions?
Colleges that follow the rolling admissions system review applications as they come in and reply to students with news of their acceptance or rejection within four to six weeks of their submission.
